2020 was a year filled with major tragedies, with the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, as the main headline. Until now, the COVID-19 pandemic is still lurking while pharmaceutical companies are on a race for developing a working vaccine.

While the pandemic is ongoing, the planet has enjoyed a brief pause on pollution from the industry and transportation sectors. However, it is still far from preventing extreme weather events that are possibly brought by climate change.

• Temperature

2020 is considered as the 3rd warmest year ever recorded wherein the Earth was 1.2 degrees Celsius warmer than the average from January to October. The massive wildfires happening in Australia, Americay and in the Amazon forest may have greatly affected such increase.

• Cyclones

Aside from the fiery disasters, cyclones and heavy rainfall have also done damages to different places. The Atlantic Hurricane Season is said to be the most dramatic and record-breaking since it experienced 30 cyclones.

Additionally, the Atlantic Ocean experienced a five-storm system in September. This rare event occurred last in September 1971.

• Human Migration

Due to the extreme weather conditions, many people were forced to abandon their residences and transfer to much safer locations. However, because of the pandemic, migration has become selective.
